Never Give Up Part4 (Mary Kom's Story)

India’s iron lady is one of the top sportswomen and will remain proudmentor to boxing lovers forever. May God bless her with many successes in future bouts!!
She is a five-time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.
She became the first Indian woman boxer to get a Gold Medal in the Asian Games in 2014 in Incheon, South Korea and is the first Indian Woman Boxer to win Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
On 26 April 2016, Kom was nominated by the President of India as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. In March 2017, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, appointed Mary Kom as national observers for boxing.
MC Marry Kom won her fifth gold medal in Asian boxing Championship in the summit clash on Wednesday 8thNovember 2017 at Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, known to millions as Mary Kom, is an Indian boxer born on March 1, 1983. She belongs to the Kom tribal community of Manipur. She was awarded the World Boxing championship title five times and is the only woman boxer in the world to have won a medal in each of the six world championships she participated in.
Mary Kom was born in Kangathei, Manipur, to Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom, who used to work in jhum fields. Mary Kom completed eight years of education in Moirang and proceeded to Imphal for her ninth and tenth standards. Unfortunately, she could not pass her examinations. So, she quit school and gave her examination from NIOS and graduated from Churachandpur College. Although she was not brilliant academically, she did not give up on life. Not everyone is good at studies; some are good at sports.
"To be a successful boxer one must also have a strong heart. Some women are physically strong but fail when it comes to having a strong heart. One also must have the zeal and the right fighting spirit. We work harder than men and are determined to fight with all our strength to make our nation proud. God has given me the talent and it’s only because of sheer grit and hard work that I have made it so far."
From young, Mary Kom was interested in athletics, but the success of Dingko Singh, an Indian boxer born in Manipur, in the 1998 Asian Games ignited passion in Mary Kom and propelled her to enhance her boxing skills and become a professional boxer. Just like Mary Kom, we have role models of our own and we look up to them. When they achieve great things in life, we are inspired to follow in their footsteps, and this is what Mary Kom did. In 2000, she began her training under M Narjit Singh, Manipur State Boxing Coach.
Since boxing is considered unsuitable for women by many, Mary Kom hid her passion and interest from her family and her family came to know about her interest through a newspaper when she won the Manipur State Boxing championship in 2000. Youths of today can learn a lot from Mary Kom. Many of the youngsters today are afraid to pursue their dreams; they are afraid of rejections from the society. Success can never materialise from fear. For success, one needs to be confident and determined. If you are certain about your goals and your abilities, you should take up the challenge and pursue them. Only then will you be able to reach the peak of success.
Mary Kom started boxing at the international level at the age of 18, which is considered old by several standards. However, she did not lose faith. C S Lewis, a famous poet and novelist, once said, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream”. In order for dreams to become a reality, passion, hard work and dedication are necessary; age is not a criterion. Mary Kom proved to the world that age is nothing but a number. Her determination to succeed in the world of boxing won her many medals, including a bronze medal in 2012 Olympics.
For her contribution to sports, the Indian government bestowed her with a number of awards, including the Arjuna Award in 2003, Padma Shree in 2006 and Padma Bhushan in 2013. Today, Mary Kom is happily married and has two sons. Her accomplishments are remarkable, which is why Sanjay Leela Bhansali, an acclaimed film director, decided to make a movie on Mary Kom’s life. The movie was released with PC ( Priyanka Chopra )  as a main lead in the movie as Marie Kom. Both local and international audiences liked movie and won accolades. With this movie, thousands of children and adults felt inspired by Mary Kom to excel not only in sports but in any field they are interested in.

Image result for valentine day
Millions of people will be lining up to buy their lovers chocolate covered strawberries and bouquets of roses this Valentine's Day. But have you ever wondered how this day dedicated to love came to be?  we've uncovered the most interesting facts about the sweetest holiday of the year

1. Valentine's Day started with the Romans.

There are two theories about the origin of Valentine's Day. According to History.com, one is that the day derives from Lupercalia, a raucous Roman festival on February 15th where men stripped naked and spanked young maidens in the hopes of upping their fertility.
The second theory is that while the Roman Emperor Claudius II was trying to bolster his army, he forbade young men to marry, because apparently single men make better soldiers. In the spirit of love, St. Valentine defied the ban and performed secret marriages, History.com reports. For his disobedience, Valentine was executed on February 14th.Valentine's Day Facts

2. Passing out Valentines is a 600-year-old tradition.

Each year, kids in classrooms across America hand out Valentine's Day cards to their classmates. According to History.com, the oldest record of a valentine was a poem Charles Duke of Orleans wrote to his wife when he was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415.

    3. Esther Howland is the first manufacturer of Valentines.

She became known as the "Mother of the American Valentine" for the artistry and sentiment of her designs, Time reports. Before Howland commercialized them, American valentines were less romantic and more comic. Her inspiration came from the thoughtful and sweet greeting cards that were circulating in England and she decided to sell similar designs in the U.S. They took off: During the 1850s she earned $100,000 annually, which is about $3 million today, according to Time.

    4. Today, millions of greeting cards are purchased every year.

We're talking 144 million greeting cards being exchanged industry-wide every year for Valentine's Day in the U.S. alone, according to Hallmark.

    5. Wearing your heart on your sleeve is more than just a phrase.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names to see who their Valentine would be, the LA Times reports. According to Smithsonian, they would wear the name pinned to their sleeve for one week so that everyone would know their supposed true feelings.

    6. People consider pink and red the colors of love.

According to the National Confectioners Association, around 65% of Americans believe that the packaging of Valentine's Day candies and chocolates should be red and pink.

        7. Candy hearts were originally medical lozenges.

In 1847, Boston pharmacist Oliver Chase invented a machine that simplified the lozenge production process, resulting in the first candy-making machine, according to The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America. After identifying an opportunity to revolutionize the candy business, Chase shifted his focus to candy production with Necco wafers.

        8. The candies got their iconic shape much later.

It wasn't until 15 years after the creation of Necco wafers that Daniel Chase's brother, Oliver Chase, developed a way to press words onto the candy lozenges with a felt roller pad and vegetable food coloring. According to The Huffington Post, the conversation candies officially became heart-shaped in 1902, and today Necco says about 100,000 of them are sold each year.

        9. The heart shape wasn't always a romantic symbol.

According to Time, the heart was once widely believed to be humans' center of memory, where feelings of love were recorded. However, we have French and Italian artists from the 14th century to thank for the symbol that we know and love today, as they were the first ones to start using this motif in their work.

        10. Cupid's bow and arrow aren't just for show.

In Roman mythology, Cupid is the son of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, Medium reports. According to CNN, he's often depicted with a bow and arrows to pierce hearts and cast a spell of love.

        11. Roses are the flowers of love.

Speaking of cupid and his roses, can you guess the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess? The red rose, of course. The bud stands for strong romantic feelings, so it's no surprise they make up the most popular Valentine's Day bouquets.

        12. Valentine's Day is a popular holiday to get engaged.

This seems fitting: A 2017 study by diamond retailer James Allen found that 43% of millennials chose Valentine's Day as their top choice of day to propose or be proposed to.

        13. Americans spend a lot on love.

According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, Americans spent $18.2 billion for Valentine's Day in 2017 and were expected to spend $19.6 billion in 2018.

        14. Men and women prefer the same of candy.

Both men and women prefer to receive chocolate over flowers, according to the National Confectioners Association. The survey also found that chocolate sales represent 75% or more of Valentine's Day candy purchases.

        15. The chocolate box has been around for more than 140 years.

In addition to creating arguably the richest, creamiest, and sweetest chocolate on the market, Richard Cadbury also introduced the first box of Valentine's Day chocolates in 1868, History.com reports.

        16. And there's a standout favorite in every box.

According to the National Confectioners Association, caramels are the most popular flavor in chocolate boxes, followed by chocolate-covered nuts, chocolate-filled, cream-filled, and coconut.

            17. Experiential gifts are on the rise.

In 2017, 40% of consumers told the National Retail Federation they wanted an "experience gift"— a.k.a. tickets to a concert or other event, an outdoor activity, or an evening out — although only 24% planned to give one. This gift option is particularly popular with millennials: 45% of people ages 18-24 and 40 percent of people ages 25-34 said they planned to give experiences for Valentine's Day.

            18. More Americans skip Valentine's Day than you realize.

Whether it's because they're single or think the holiday is beyond cheesy, about 3 in 10 adults reported in a survey by the National Retail Federation that they're not celebrating the day of love, though they may treat themselves to a small gift or a night out with friends and family. Oh well, more chocolate and roses for us!

            INSPIRING STORY OF ARUNIMA SINHA

As a national level volleyball player, Arunima from Ambedkarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, was an unstoppable soul. When a gang of robbers drove her out of a moving train in 2011, she firmly concluded that she would not cringe down. She was tired of people looking at her with pity in their eyes, and mountaineering caught her eye. She found it as a perfect action to symbolic and tangible achievement. It literally embodied the spirit of fighting and conquering obstacles.
            Image result for arunima sinha
She contacted Bachendri Pal in 2011 by telephone and signed up for training under her at the Uttarkashi camp of the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) 2012. Sinha climbed Island Peak (6150 metres) in 2012 as preparation for her ascent of Everest. Nothing could falter her from her dream. On her first deed while in transit to the summit, she was so cheerful to have achieved the base camp that she lost balance and tumbled to the ground, injuring herself in the process. In the following journey, there were no stepping tools to sustain her to the opposite side of a wide crevice. She was compelled to bounce crosswise over holes which in the event that she missed, would have ended her life. On the day she endeavoured to summit the Mount Everest, she and her Sherpa were the first to leave the camp. When they were very close to the summit, her Sherpa gave her some terrible news. Their oxygen levels were quickly exhausting, and they needed to return the following day for another attempt. Sinha was adamant on completing the summit that very day. With the help of the Sherpa, after two hours, they were at the pinnacle of Mount Everest, and of her success at 10:55 am on 21 May 2013. Those 7 minutes atop the summit were the best moments of her life. She just wanted to shout out to the world that she had done it.
Arunima Sinha has been included as one of the ‘People of the Year’ by Limca Book of Records in 2016. She is now dedicated towards social welfare and she wants to open a free sports academy for the poor and differently-abled persons. She is donating all the financial aids she is getting through awards and seminars for the same cause. The academy would be named Pandit Chandra Shekhar Vikalang Khel Academy. In her website arunimasinha.com, she is noted as saying, “I have achieved my goal but now I want to help physically challenged people to achieve their goal so that they can also become self-dependent and nobody looks at them with pity.

Pal was born into a rural working-class family in what is now Uttarakhand and was one of seven children.
A gifted student, she encountered stiff opposition from her family and relatives when she decided to opt for a career as a professional mountaineer rather than as a schoolteacher.Bachendri Pal - first Indian woman - Mt Everest
She soon found success in her chosen field, however. After summitting a number of smaller peaks, she was selected to join India’s first mixed-gender team to attempt an expedition to Mount Everest. Beginning its ascent in early May 1984, her team almost met disaster when an avalanche buried its camp, and more than half the group was forced to abandon the ascent because of injury or fatigue. Pal and the remainder of the team pressed on, and she reached the summit on May 23, 1984.Image result for bachendri pal on top of himalaya
Pal achieved immediate fame, and in 1985 she returned to Mount Everest to successfully lead an all-woman team to the summit. She led an all-woman rafting expedition down the Ganges River in 1994, covering over 1,500 miles (2,500 km). Image result for BACHENDRI PAL STORY IN SHORT NOTE
In 1997 she led an all-woman team on a successful 2,500-mile (4,000-km) transit of the Himalayas, beginning in Arunachal Pradesh and concluding at the Siachen Glacier. She was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, in 1984.

Gradually, a permanent building of Humanity Hospital came into being in Hanspukur village near Kolkata, in the year 1996. A lifetime of patience and crushing hardwork had led to this moment. The hospital building was inaugurated by the then-West Bengal governor, K.V. Raghunath Reddy.

Apart from building a hospital that runs on charity, her dream was to see one of her children as a doctor in her hospital. Now, among the 12 doctors at the hospital, one is Ajoy, her younger son, who carries on his mother's vision.
This powerhouse of humbleness and magnanimity received Padma Shri earlier this year for her social work. She gathered the award clad in simplicity, wearing chappals.

She also received Godfrey Phillips Bravery Award in the mind-of-steel category, in 2009.

Now, Subhasini aims to make her hospital function like any other modern-day 24-hours facility hospital. As of earlier this year, an ICU was yet to be set up in the hospital. According to India Today, there remains, at times, a lack of ready availability of doctors and nurses since the hospital runs on donations and they are not paid.Despite all the shortcomings, Subhasini keeps her head high and her heart strong to take down problems as they come. Unstoppable, this woman, is the real star of India. And it's because of people like her that our faith in the genuine goodness of humankind gets reestablished.
On the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, actor-turned-producer, Dev Adhikary announced that he will produce a biopic on the life of Subhasini.

            ABOUT KUMBH
The Kumbh Mela (the festival of the sacred pitcher) is anchored in Hindu mythology. It is the largest public gathering and collective act of faith, anywhere in the world. The Mela draws tens of millions of pilgrims over the course of approximately 48 days to bathe at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna, and the mystical Sarasvati. Primarily, this congregation includes Ascetics, Saints, Sadhus, Sadhvis, Kalpvasis, and Pilgrims from all walks of life.
Kumbh Mela, in Hinduism, is a religious pilgrimage that is celebrated four times over a course of 12 years. The geographical location of Kumbh Mela spans over four locations in India and the Mela site keeps rotating between one of the four pilgrimages on four sacred rivers as listed below:
            • Haridwar on the Ganges in Uttarakhand
            • Ujjain on the Shipra in Madhya Pradesh
            • Nashik on the Godavari in Maharashtra
            • Prayagraj at the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna, and the mythical Sarasvati in Uttar Pradesh
Each site’s celebration is based on a distinct set of astrological positions of the Sun, the Moon, and the Jupiter. The celebrations occur at the exact moment when these positions are fully occupied, as it is considered to be the holiest time in Hinduism. The Kumbh Mela is an event that intrinsically encapsulates the science of astronomy, astrology, spirituality, ritualistic traditions, and socio-cultural customs and practices, making it extremely rich in knowledge.
Pilgrims to the Kumbh Mela come from all sections of the religion ranging from Sadhus (saints) and Naga Sadhus who practice ‘sadhana’ and keenly follow a strict path of spiritual discipline, to Hermits who leave their seclusion and come to visit the civilization only during the Kumbh Mela, to seekers of spirituality, and to common people practicing Hinduism.
During the Kumbh Mela, a number of ceremonies take place; the traditional procession of Akharas called ‘Peshwai’ on elephant backs, horses and chariots, the shining swords and rituals of Naga Sadhus during ‘Shahi Snaan’, and many other cultural activities that attract millions of pilgrims to attend the Kumbh Mela.

            REAL STORY OF SURGICAL STRIKE

On 29 September 2016, eleven days after a terror attack in Uri, the Indian army conducted 'surgical strikes' against suspected militants in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. analyst Sandeep Singh, writing in The Diplomat, said that the operation is better characterised as a cross-border raid because "surgical strikes" involve striking deep into the enemy territory and typically using air power.Same types of strikes they conducted against terrorist camps residing in Myanmar

            Line of Control

            Result
            • Successful surgical strike across the Line of Control, terrorist bases neutralised (Indian claim)
            • Skirmishes along the Line of Control, Line of Control not crossed by Indian troops (Pakistani claim)
            • Start of continues India–Pakistan border skirmishes

WHY WAS THE SURGICAL STRIKE DONE BY INDIA?
On 18 September, a a fedayeen attack was made by four armed militants on an army base near the town of Uri. Nineteen Indian Army soldiers were killed. India accused Jaish-e-Muhammad, a Pakistan-based terrorist organisation.Having come after similar fidayeen attacks in Gurdaspur and Pathankot, the Uri attack gave rise to high degree of concern in India. The following day, the Indian army said that it had displayed considerable restraint in the wake of the attacks, but it reserved the right to respond "at the time and place of our own choosing.”.
The Guardian said that Indian patience had run out due to Pakistan's inaction in curbing the activities of terrorist organisations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad. On 21 September, India summoned the Pakistan High Commission Abdul Bassit and gave a protest letter detailing the involvement of a terrorist group based in Pakistan.Pakistan later said that India had provided no evidence that the Uri attack was launched from Pakistan. Pakistan's defence minister suggested that India had carried out the Uri attack to deflect attention from the popular protests in Jammu and Kashmir. The Hindustan Times reported that the minister's comments made up an "inflection point", after which India decided to respond militarily.
Indian officials said that the cross-border infiltration across the Line of Control had surged since the unrest began in Kashmir. The persons crossing the border showed evidence of military training. According to a government source close to Home Minister Rajnath Singh, a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security was held on 24 September, at which "broad details of targeting terrorists" were discussed
WHEN AND HOW SURGICAL STRIKE WAS DONE BY INDIA
On 29 September, eleven days after the Uri attack, the Indian Army conducted surgical strikes against suspected militants in Pakistani-administered Kashmir. Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, Indian Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), said that it had received "very credible and specific information" about "terrorist teams" who were preparing to "carry out infiltration and conduct terrorist strikes inside Jammu and Kashmir and in various metros in other states". The Indian action was meant to pre-empt their infiltration. India presented its operation as preemptive self-defence against terrorism, striking against terrorist infrastructure along with "those who are trying to support them." Columnist Ankit Panda thought the latter included Pakistani soldiers or the elements of Pakistani state. On 30 September, Indian minister for information and broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said that there had been no aerial strikes and that the operation had been conducted "on the ground".
Ranbir Singh said that his Pakistani counterpart had been informed. The Pakistani military said the DGMO communications discussed only the cross-border firing, which was part of the existing rules of engagement.
Pakistan denied that such surgical strikes occurred. The Inter-Services Public Relationssaid that there had been only "cross border firing". But, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the "unprovoked and naked aggression of Indian forces", and said that Pakistani military was capable of thwarting any attacks by India.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said that the UN Observer Group in Pakistani Kashmir did not directly observe any "firing across the Line of Control" relating to the incident. The Indian envoy at UN Syed Akbaruddin dismissed this statement, saying "facts on the ground do not change whether somebody acknowledges or not."
Analyst Sandeep Singh, writing in The Diplomat, said that the operation is better characterised as a cross-border raid because "surgical strikes" involve striking deep into the enemy territory and typically using air power.
